About
Why this site exists
Japanese food is often seen abroad as fish-first: dashi, bonito flakes, seafood everywhere. But Japan also has a centuries-old tradition of plant-based cooking — shojin ryori, the temple cuisine — and a modern home-cooking culture full of vegetables, tofu, beans and fermented staples. This site translates that everyday Japanese plant-based cooking for English-speaking kitchens.
What makes these recipes different
- Everything is cooked by me, in Japan. Every recipe and photo comes from my own stove — no stock photos, no AI-generated images.
- Tested for US kitchens. Each English recipe includes both US cups and metric weights, plus notes on where to find Japanese ingredients (and what to substitute).
- Written, not translated. These aren't machine translations of my Japanese recipes — each one is rewritten for readers cooking outside Japan.
